Sociology of Race and Ethnicity

Course Description of the Educator: We will explore various conceptualizations of race and ethnicity and how it operates in various spheres of life in the US. We will also study how social structure shapes relations within and between racial and ethnic categories. In doing so, we will see how: (1) race is more a social construction than a biological or essential fact; (2) non-white racial and ethnic categories have more in common than not; and (3) systems of stratification affect people to various degrees, depending on their race and/or ethnicity.
